Web 1.0 refers to the first generation & the earliest phase of the World Wide Web, which emerged in the early 1990s and lasted until the early 2000s. Content was created and controlled by website owners, and users could only view or read it. It was primarily static and read-only, meaning websites mainly delivered information without much interactivity. Users could view content, but they couldn't interact with it or contribute. Web pages were simple, text-based, and linked through basic hyperlinks. Examples of Web 1.0 elements include static HTML pages and early search engines.
For example, early websites like Yahoo Directory provided a list of links to information on various topics, but users couldn’t interact, comment, or customize their experience. Web 1.0 sites were often simple HTML pages, with minimal graphics or design features, focused on delivering information directly.
